The Microsoft Sculpt Ergonomic Desktop package is comprised of three separate components – a keyboard, number pad, and mouse.

The Keyboard Ergonomic Design:

The split design of the keyboard, with a slight upward angle toward the midline, is designed to promote more neutral wrist and forearm postures.  The keyboard also has a built-in palm rest, and comes with an optional reverse tilt attachment for elevating the front of the keyboard.

Unlike standard keyboards, the number pad is completely separate from the keyboard, providing greater flexibility with workstation setup.  Users who do not frequently use the number pad can position it to either side or behind the keyboard, allowing the mouse to be positioned directly beside the keyboard.  The lateral reach past the number pad on a traditional keyboard can be a source of discomfort, particularly for petite users, and the Microsoft Sculpt significantly reduces that reach.

The Mouse Ergonomic Design:

The right-handed mouse has a slight vertical design, with a deep thumb rest, encouraging a more neutral wrist and forearm posture.  The mouse also has a slot for storing the USB receiver that provides the wireless connection for all three devices.

Dimensions:

  • Keyboard – 15.4” wide, 8.96” deep
  • Mouse – 3.13” wide, 3.87” deep
  • Number pad – 3.65” wide, 5.21” deep

Benefits noted by our Ergonomist:

  • Split and dome-shaped keyboard promotes neutral wrist and forearm postures when typing
  • Separate number pad provides greater flexibility with workspace setup, allowing placement of the mouse closer to the keyboard
  • Natural-shaped mouse with thumb rest promotes relaxed hand posture
  • Built-in cushioned palm rest on keyboard reduces contact stress on the palms and provides a place to rest the palms between keystrokes
  • Optional reverse tilt attachment for keyboard provides option of typing with a negative tilt, which may help some users type with straight wrists and minimize wrist extension (backward bending)
  • All three components use one USB receiver – beneficial for limited USB ports on computer device
  • As all the components are wireless, they can easily be stored away or transported between offices

Some non-optimal features noted by our Ergonomist:

  • The mouse is only 3.87” deep, which may be too small for users with larger hands
  • There is currently no left-handed mouse package option
  • If the USB receiver is misplaced, all three components will not work, making the whole package obsolete
